The crunch point for me came a couple of months ago when Adobe put up the price of the Premier Pro subscription to nearly £20 a month. As time went on I got used to Premier Pro although I wasn't using half its capabilities. Initially I really struggled with Premier Pro and found that about 50% of the time I went back to iMovie to edit straightforward videos and saved Premier Pro for the more involved films.

I started off with iMovie but found that although it was very quick and easy to work with it lacked certain editing facilities (primarily for me control over colour and sharpness) that I wanted to have, so I decided to take out a subsctiption to Premier Pro and move up. I've been editing video for a couple of years. Personally I am disappointed, or maybe I simply set my expectations too high. However, for anyone starting video editing with no previous experience of arguably more user-friendly and faster products to compare against, then this may well tick all the boxes.

Yes, it is powerful and packed with features if you have the time and patience to find them but if you are already used to other more user-friendly and enjoyable video editing software such as Cyberlink PowerDirector or CorelVideo Studio where learning and experimenting can be fun, then I think Adobe is likely to be more of a challenge. I've found it very much slower than all other suites I've used, clunky, less intuitive, doesn't appear to offer anything new and is relatively expensive.

Having used many video editing packages and suites including Cyberlink PowerDirector, Magix, Corel VideoStudio, Serif MovieMaker plus others, I had high expectations for Premier Elements thinking of it as being a widely recognised product and market leader. However, it remained slower, less user-friendly and was more tedious than other packages and it's not one I found enjoyable to use. Similarly, they can be easily removed by clicking on a 'bin' icon giving good flexibility. In use, I found the 'Expert' mode to most closely replicate video editing I'm familiar with including effects which can be dragged onto clips, eg to add an emboss effect, picture in picture or transitions and the effects and transitions can be edited to user preferences. Like all video editing programs, video clips have to be selected and imported and whereas on other programs they were dropped into a panel on the working screen, here I found it took at least 3x as long to import the very same files from the same source. The Video Editor can be used in either 'Quick' (simple editing), 'Guided' or 'Expert' mode which offers multi-track editing and a wide range of features but no 3D, 4K or multi-camera support, the latter being something I normally use for event filming to give different perspectives of a scene. My husband swears by the Organiser for grouping photos and video clips by people, places, events or other themes but I prefer to keep mine in dated folders.

The start-up welcome screen can launch into a trial of 'Photoshop' for photo editing, 'Organiser' for cataloging images or the Elements 'Video Editor' which I'm focusing on for this review.
